Q&A
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Everything you need to know before getting started at Nexus.
Is Jiu-Jitsu suitable for beginners?
Yes. Many of our students have no prior martial arts experience. Our classes are structured to help beginners feel comfortable, learn properly, and build confidence step by step. You do not need to be fit, experienced, or “ready” before starting.
At what age can my child start Jiu-Jitsu?
Children can start at Nexus from as young as 4 years old. We offer age-appropriate classes designed around different stages of development, so kids can learn in a structured, safe, and supportive environment. If you are unsure which class is best for your child, contact us, and we will guide you to the right starting point.
What should I wear to my first Jiu-Jitsu class?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. If you are just getting started, there is no need to overcomplicate it. We will guide you through anything else you need.
What if I have no martial arts experience?
That is completely fine. Many people who start at Nexus are total beginners. Our coaching is designed to help new students learn in a structured, supportive environment without feeling overwhelmed.
Can I try Jiu-Jitsu before becoming a member?
Yes. The best way to start is through the Nexus Foundations Trial. It gives you a structured introduction to the academy, the coaching environment, and the way we train before moving into membership.
What is a gi?
A gi is the traditional Jiu-Jitsu uniform used in many classes. If you are new and unsure about what you need, do not worry — we can explain everything and guide you before you begin.
Are there any hidden fees or long-term commitments?
No hidden fees. We believe in being clear and straightforward about pricing and options. If you have any questions about memberships or starting with the Foundations Trial, our team will walk you through it clearly.
What if I cannot attend every class?
That is okay. We understand people have work, school, family, and other commitments. The goal is not perfection. The goal is consistency over time. We help students find a training rhythm that works for their schedule.
Do I need special shoes for Jiu-Jitsu?
No. Jiu-Jitsu is trained barefoot on the mats. We simply ask students to follow good hygiene and academy standards to help keep the training environment clean and safe.
Can I wear my gi from another academy?
In many cases, yes, for an initial session, but it is best to check with us first. We want to make sure presentation and academy standards are respected. If you are unsure, contact us, and we will guide you.
